In the Spring of 2017 I was invited to lead a workshop at BCAT in Brockway, PA. Over the course of four days we built a kiln that I designed to be used to fire pots using a technique called Raku. Raku firing originated in Korea and eventually made its way to Japan before being brought to the U.S. by master artist and potter Paul Soldner. The modern version of the technique is widely used today by ceramist and required removing the pots from the kiln at a glowing red heat of around 1800*f. The pots are then cooled in a bed of organic material and cut off from any oxygen the combustion of the organic material and the smoky atmosphere of the ware chamber creates exciting and appealing surfaces on the pots.
